Seasonal Fishing

Spring and Summer: During the warmer months, we primarily use live bait, with some days dedicated to lure fishing. This period is ideal for family outings, as the weather is generally mild and the fish are biting aggressively, making it perfect for anglers of all experience levels.

Fall and Winter: As Lake Texoma water temperatures cool towards the end of the year, we switch to artificial lure fishing, targeting trophy-quality stripers. This is the time for anyone looking to catch the big ones!

Licensing: Since Lake Texoma spans both Texas and Oklahoma, a “Lake Texoma” specific license is required for anyone 17 years of age or older.

About Lake Texoma: The Striper Capital of the World

Lake Texoma, nestled on the border between Texas and Oklahoma, is a remarkable reservoir with a rich history and a vibrant fishing culture. This article delves into its origins, its rise to fame as the Striper Capital of the World, and the popular sport fishing that defines it.

Origins of Lake Texoma

Lake Texoma was created by the construction of the Denison Dam on the Red River, completed in 1944. This ambitious project was initiated primarily for flood control and hydroelectric power generation. The lake spans approximately 89,000 acres and is fed by the Red and Washita Rivers. Its creation transformed the surrounding region, providing a vital water source and a hub for recreational activities.

The Striper Capital of the World

Lake Texoma earned the title of the Striper Capital of the World due to its thriving population of striped bass, also known as “stripers.” The lake’s unique conditions, including its mix of freshwater and saltwater from the Red River, create an ideal habitat for these fish. The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation began stocking striped bass in the lake in the 1960s, and by the 1970s, the population had become self-sustaining. This natural reproduction is rare among inland lakes, making Lake Texoma a standout destination for striper fishing.

Popular Sport Fishing

The most popular sport fishing activity at Lake Texoma is undoubtedly striped bass fishing. Anglers from all over the country flock to the lake to experience the thrill of catching these powerful fish. Striped bass are known for their aggressive feeding habits and strong fight, making them a favorite among both novice and experienced fishermen. The lake’s abundant shad population provides a constant food source for the stripers, ensuring healthy and sizable fish.

Striped Bass and Lake Texoma

Striped bass have become synonymous with Lake Texoma due to their significant presence and the lake’s reputation for producing large, trophy-sized fish. The economic impact of striper fishing in the area is substantial, contributing millions of dollars annually to the local economy. The fish’s popularity is also due to their schooling behavior, which allows anglers to catch multiple fish in a single outing, adding to the excitement and appeal of fishing at Lake Texoma.

Lake Texoma’s rich history, ideal conditions for striped bass, and its status as a premier fishing destination make it a unique and cherished location for anglers. Whether you’re a seasoned fisherman or a beginner, the Striper Capital of the World offers an unparalleled fishing experience.
